Introduction
Larry the ladybug watched his friend Carlos the  Caterpillar turn into a butterfly. He went and asked praying mantis Penelope, the ruler of the insect kingdom, how this happened to his friend.  I want you to pretend that you are Larry and I want you to tell me what happened to Carlos. I also want you to learn all about Carlos and how he looks.

The Task

1.I want you to be able to draw the four stages of a butterfly in order and cut and paste the names of the stages under your pictures.

2.Show me that you know what it means to be symmetrical by coloring a picture of a butterfly that is symmertical.

3.Pick your favorite butterfly and insert it in a pictograph.
Discuss the pictograph: more, less, equal.

4.Read The Butterfly Alphabet and locate the letters of the alphabet in the butterfly's wings.

5.Make butterfly's out of pretzels and peanut butter

The Process

1.Listen to the teacher as she reads the book From Caterpillar to Butterfly. Look at the pictures below: they are in  the correct order for a butterfly's life cycle.
THE EGG

THE LARVA\CATERPILLAR

THE PUPA/CHRYSALIS

THE BUTTERFLY

2.Discuss symmetry on a butterfly. Find other types of symmetry and email the answers to answers.

Take the butterfly drawing and color a butterfly that is symmertrical.

3.Take a picture of your favorite butterfly that the teacher shows you on the web site  butterfly pictures . Insert it onto the pictograph.

Discuss the pictograph with the class. Pick out the butterfly that is liked the most, the least, and see if any are equally liked.

4.Sit and listen to the teacher read The Butterfly Alphabet .
Pay attention because she might call on you to trace over the letter that is hidden in the butterfly's wing.

5.Look at the recipe on the flip chart on how to make a pretzel butterfly. Make one on your own when you get back to your table.

Evaluation

1. :+) If the student completes the four pictures correctly and in order.
:+| If the student draws the four pictures but they are not in the correct order.
:+( If the student doesn't draw the four pictures.

2. :+) If the student correctly draws and colors the butterfly symmetrically.
:+| If the student shows an attempt to correctly color the butterfly symmetrically.
:+( If the student does not have anything that is close to being symmetrical.

3. :+) If the student participates in the pictograph activity.
:+( If the student does not participate in the pictograph activity.

4. :+) If the student participates in the book and  locates the correct letter being discussed by tracing it with his/her finger.
:+| If the student does only one of the above activities.
:+( If the student does not do any of the above activities.

5. :+) If the student correctly makes the pretzel butterfly.
:+( If the student does not follow directions and makes the pretzel butterfly.

Conclusion

You should now have a wonderful understanding on a butterfly's life cycle, and how beautiful butterflies really are. Hopefully you will respect them and help protect them when you see them in the wild.
